SOCIAL DISTANCE THE RIGHT WAY

About

Learn about the Ski Bum

How can I ski all of the time? I grew up asking myself this question. My ski days started in Michigan where the cold and wind seem to amplify each other. I had heard of a place called Aspen and I dreamed of one day skiing there.

My dream came true after graduating college. While driving from Bloomington, IN, enroute to my father’s home in Los Angeles, a little voice came in my ear; “There is no place like Aspen”. So my “72” Super Beetle found its way to the slopes of Aspen where the dream continued! I worked at the Ullrhof Restaurant at the base of the Big Burn to get that free three Mountain pass.

Fast forward a few years and I found myself asking myself; “How can I ski all of the time”. So I tried out with the Snowshoe Ski Patrol and got accepted! Now I needed a place to stay!

So that is how Ski Bum Condos came about. It started with a dream! The homes I have bought vary in size and furnishings but they all have one thing in common. All are walking distance to everything. I know what it is like to have small kids

and have to lug equipment, food and supplies to the slopes. Our three kids started out on skis when they were between 4 and 5 years old. We stayed in places where it was exhausting just getting to the slopes. Our homes are such that you can ski in, grab a bite and warm up and get back out with ease.

If a picture is worth 1000 words, then this picture tells my story. I am a Ski Bum! The best way to enjoy the skiing and mountains is to be a part of them.

The Mountains are calling! Listen to them. Come be a part of the Mountains and enjoy Natures playground!

Tips For Enjoyment

We have rented both 4 wheel drive and front wheel drive vehicles. I can tell you first hand that front wheel drive vehicles struggle at best in a snow storm with icy conditions on I-70 going over the mountain pass. I have driven with white knuckles at 3-5mph with the tires spinning heading to the airport and praying to make it alive! My advice is simple, rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle in ski season or take the Colorado Shuttle (or one of the several competitors). I have made the gamble during Spring skiing with a front wheel drive vehicle and have lost the gamble.

Driving your personal car to Breckenridge:

Drive a 4-wheel drive (winter) and or buy chains online for your vehicle and have them with you. Know how to put them on before you make the journey.

Make your reservation with the Colorado Mountain Express prior to arrival at Denver International. Here is their link: http://www.coloradomountainexpress.com (http://www.coloradomountainexpress.com)
You can easily get by with no car or SUV for your Breckenridge Holiday! City Market (owned by Kroger) is .47 miles (0.76 km) away from our curb. The grocery store is the farthest point of any shopping that you will need for your Holiday! Walk to the store, load up with groceries and take the free shuttle back. The bus stop is steps away from our front door.

The Yellow Route is the bus route that takes you from the bus stop out our door to the City Market. Check the web site for the Yellow route times.
Take the Summit Stage Free Ride http://www.co.summit.co.us/index.aspx?NID=586 (http://www.co.summit.co.us/index.aspx?NID=586) bus to ski, Copper, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin. Once again the ride is FREE!

Below gives you an idea of how centrally located we are in Breckenridge! I used MapMyFitness.com, powered by Google Maps, to get these distances. I used the front curb from our home in the direction of travel to get these distances.

Lift tickets are best bought prior to your arrival. The most expensive way to buy a ticket is at the ticket window the day you are skiing. There are many different options and web sites to shop your ticket. Be creative in your search. Check eBay and Craigslist if you are comfortable making purchases on these sites. Also American Express rewards has 2 for 1 deals using points. Check Costco, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club as they frequently sell 2 for 1 passes or discounted passes.

We have a local hard-wired cordless phone for the traditional folks and our European guests. Our local number is (970) 453-2594. The cell phone connections work very well on the mountain as well as here in town. Skype is our favorite way to talk to our kids.

These are just a few of the things you might want to bring and serve as a reminder. By far, this is not everything you will need for your trip!

Sunscreen and lip balm Slippers
Toiletries
Bathing suit

Work out gear for Recreation Center Warm walking insulated shoes / boots A hat that keeps your ears warm

Ski Clothing is available at many of the stores. You will pay more for the clothing here in Breckenridge than at home unless you are skiing late March / early April. The sales kick in on everything and that is a great time to replenish your gear and clothing.

Our Kitchen:

Our kitchen has everything you will need for just about any dinner you might make. From a spaghetti pot to a crock-pot, we have it. There is a gas grill just outside that is available on a first come first served basis for your grilling needs.

Restaurants:

These are some of our favorites. All are walking distance! (Don’t drive!). –> Dress warm (winter) going into town and you will have a blast. Dress for South Carolina nights and you will be miserable! Leave your suit and tie at home. Nice jeans and a casual polo are the norm. I have yet to see anyone wearing a suit at any of the restaurants or anywhere here in town.

Fatty’s on South Ridge St is one of the favorite locals hang out. Pizza and Fat Tire (local Colorado) beer! The Italian fare they offer is good as well. We go for the beer and Pizza! It feels like home!
The Crepe Place on South Main Street. You will know you have found it when you find the trailer and the workers all look like they have an altitude high! Try the Raspberry and white chocolate crepe. You have to ask to get the white chocolate. This is the desert place! Enjoy it by the fire! Hands down the one place to go for a true Breckenridge experience…Warning… wear full winter gear! Being numb from cold will not make this a fun experience. You can easily wait… outside for 30 minutes (due to popularity) to get your desert.

We love the Blue River Bistro on N. Main Street! They have great daily specials and good food. Usually has a local musician playing background music appropriate for the atmosphere!
Giampietro’s is on E. Lincoln just off of Main Street is hands down some of the finest authentic Italian food. Order from the “specials menu”. Warning, it seats very few people… we order carry out and eat by the fireplace at home!

Hearthstone Restaurant is one of our favorites. Just down from Fatty’s on South Ridge Street. We love the $5 appetizers at Happy Hour! We order several and call it dinner! Their dinner menu is phenomenal as well.
Mountain Flying Fish is on South Main Street. Sushi chef is authentic and has been here in Breckenridge for some 20 years. It is well know and very popular place.

La Francaise on South Main St is another favorite. Authentic French Bakery with authentic chocolatines! Great way to start the day with an espresso and chocolatine! Vive la France! They have crepes, pastries, croissants and breads.

Get the daily newspaper to get deals!!! Many are 2 for 1. If you are looking for a party or things to do, find it in the daily newspaper. The paper is free. Get it early as they run out!

Have a tip to add? Send me an email and I’ll add it to the list. Enjoy
